Freedom of speech is not a luxury but a necessity and essentiality for India.
New Delhi: Alumni from five University of Delhi Colleges explored, prodded and engaged in the war of words on the subject of ‘Freedom of Speech is a Luxury India cannot afford’ at the 6th edition of ‘The Clash of the Titans Invitational Debate,’ organized by the Old Students’ Association (OSA) of Hindu College at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on 17th of November 2018.
The alumni of five prestigious colleges of Delhi University – Hindu College, Miranda House, Lady Shri Ram College, Sri Ram College of Commerce, Indraprastha College participated in this great debating competition.
Hindu College Alumni Justice Manmohan, Judge, Delhi High Court was the Chief Guest & the celebrated Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali was the Guest of Honour in this debating event.
The Jury consisted of Mr. Tarun Shridhar IAS, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy & Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture; Mr. Shakti Sinha, Director, Nehru Memorial Museum Library and Mr. MK Venu, Founding Editor, The Wire.
Eminent Media personality & Assistant Professor of Journalism Practice at O.P. Jindal Global University Ms. Kajori Sen was the Moderator.
The best Speaker award went to academic and author Radha Kumar from Miranda House and Saket Jha Saurabh from Hindu College, who heads Entertainment Partnerships for Facebook in India. The Titans Cup (the Best Team) was awarded to the Hindu College team comprising of Saket Jha Saurabh and Rohithari Rajan (global head of the ad-sales business, Zomato).
Distinguished orators Ms. Swati Bhattacharya (Creative Head at FCB Ulka) from Miranda House; Dr. Rashmi Singh, IAS (Secretary at New Delhi Municipal Council) & Ms. Rakhee Gupta Bhandari, IAS (Resident Commissioner, Punjab Bhawan New Delhi) from Lady Shri Ram College; Dr. Amit Sachdeva & Prabal Khurana from Shri Ram College of Commerce and Dr. Sanjukta Parasor, IPS (Superintendent of Police, National Investigation Agency, New Delhi) and & Ms. Mansi Radhika (Senior Manager-Trade Head, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Mumbai) from Indraprastha College participated in this unique debate.
Speakers against the motion highlighted that “freedom of speech is not a luxury but a necessity and essentiality for India. However, they emphasized that no liberty is absolute and having the freedom to speak your mind doesn’t mean closing the doors to the freedom of dissent. Other distinguished orators also crossed their swords on this topic of contemporary relevance.”
Speaking on occasion, Mr. Ravi Burman, President, OSA, Hindu College said “We are pleased to organize ‘The 6th Clash of the Titans Invitational Debate’ competition and have distinguished guests & participants from different walks of life who have brought laurels to their alma mater through their achievements. The Titans Cup debate is growing in influence each year, and this year again women speakers out-numbered the men and had a larger number of youthful debaters being showcased. Incidentally, the Hindu College team has now won the Titans Debate 2 years in a row. The Debate serves as a unique platform to bring together Alumni from Different Colleges and providing Bonding & Networking Opportunities.

Mr. Nalong Mize, Secretary to President BJP, Arunachal Pradesh on behalf of Mr. Pema Khandu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh presented a beautiful painting of the State bird of Arunachal Pradesh ‘Great Hornbill’ to Dr. Kavita Sharma, the architect of this appreciable debate.
