75 Years of Excellence: IIT Kharagpur Hosts 22nd Annual Alumni Meet During Platinum Jubilee Year

KHARAGPUR – The 2,200-acre campus of IIT Kharagpur recently transformed into a bridge between generations as it hosted the 22nd Annual Alumni Meet from January 9 to 11, 2026. This year’s reunion held a place of prestige in the institute’s history, as it coincided with the 75th Platinum Jubilee of IIT Kharagpur—celebrating three-quarters of a century since its inception as India’s first IIT.

Celebrating the Milestone Batches

The meet served as a grand homecoming for three specific milestone groups, each marking their own significant journey alongside the institute’s 75-year legacy:

• The Golden Jubilee Batch of 1976
• The Diamond Jubilee Batch of 1986
• The Silver Jubilee Batch of 2001

These batches were honored in a series of emotional ceremonies, where alumni revisited their old departments and Halls of Residence to see how their “KGP” has evolved from a nascent institute into a global powerhouse.

A Weekend of Traditions: Reliving the KGP Life

The three-day itinerary, organized by the Students’ Alumni Cell, was designed to immerse the returning batches in the nostalgia of their alma mater:

Campus Tour: The event kicked off with a comprehensive tour of the sprawling campus. Alumni marveled at the new infrastructure while revisiting the iconic landmarks like the Main Building that remain the soul of IIT Kharagpur.

Department Visits: Alumni returned to their parent departments to interact with current faculty members. These visits allowed them to see the academic evolution of their respective fields and reconnect with the roots of their professional journeys.

Hall Visits: In what was the most emotional segment of the meet, alumni returned to their respective Halls of Residence. After walking through their old wings and sharing stories with current students, the night was capped off with a Bonfire. Under the open sky, the warmth of the fire matched the “KGP Tempo” as stories from decades past were shared late into the night.

Entertania: The cultural spirit of the campus reached a fever pitch during Entertania. The musical evening began with a soulful performance by Bandish, setting the mood before the energy exploded with a headline set by Madari Live, which had alumni and students dancing.

Illumination and Gala Dinner: The night reached its crescendo with the legendary IIT KGP tradition of Illumination. Under the breathtaking glow of thousands of diyas, the community gathered for a grand Gala Dinner, celebrating the lifelong bonds formed within these walls.

The 2.2 Marathon: In a final show of spirit, the meet concluded on the last morning with the 2.2 Marathon. Running the heart of the campus side-by-side, alumni of all ages proved that the energy of a KGPian remains undiminished.

Commemorating 75 Years

As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the meet featured special sessions reflecting on the institute’s contribution to nation-building since 1951. Discussions centered on the roadmap for the next 25 years, ensuring that the legacy of the “KGPian Spirit” continues to thrive in an era of rapid technological change.
